A Taste of Roswell, Elijay Apple Festival, Cumming Greek Festival and a New Farmers Market

I need to make a real post here over the weekend, but I thought I'd update quickly with some fun Northside food events this week.

First up is the annual "A Taste of Roswell." I will probably not make it to this, but I do love it. It starts at noon on Saturday in the historic square. Its fun and the food is delicious, but it's always ridiculously crowded. Still, its a great way to sample lots of local restaurants pretty quickly.

The Elijay Apple Festival has it's final weekend. This is a pretty fun mountain crafts festival with an apple theme. The snacks are pretty good too. They do sell plenty of apples and apple themed snacks.  I usually go, but I have to skip this weekend.

The Cumming Greek Festival is going on as well. This is far smaller and less crazy than the better known Atlanta Greek Festival that just passed. The food is every bit as good and there's no need to stab someone's grandma to get to it.  Give it a shot if you're in the neighborhood.

Finally, my crippling disappointment at the Riverside Market here in Roswell closing early has subsided. Thanks to a hot tip from a user named "Haagen Daaz" over at the 285Foodies community, I found where some of my favorite vendors had migrated to. They are setting up shop at the brand new "Stewards of the Earth" market which will be located at the intersection of Roswell RD and Morgan Falls in Sandy Springs. The hours are 9AM to noon. No word yet on how many vendors will be there, or what kinds, but the word is a good chunk of the farmers from Roswell's market that still had something to bring to market are migrating there. The new market plans to stay open through the winter.

Sounds like a busy weekend. Too bad I'm studying for a test for most of it. =(

Picture Dump

I'm behind on posts, so I'm going to do my classic "Post a bunch of pictures that I planned to do posts about, but didn't" thing. You know you love it.

Ham sandwich. I pack my husband's lunch for him every morning. He likes the most boring sandwiches ever. White bread, mayo, turkey and processed cheese. I have slowly managed to coax him into more interesting sandwiches. This one is ham and swiss on wheat bread (from a bakery) with arugula. He still likes plain mayo, but I feel a little better about it.

As an aside, he used to complain about my "gourmet" taste in lunch meat. I like to get the fresh Boar's Head from the deli counter, where he would buy Oscar Meyer if left to his own devices. But then I pointed out that the cost of a half pound each of meat and cheese (a week's worth) is still not quite equal to the cost of him going out for one meal.

Some Pumpkin Curry Soup I made. I'm almost out of my pumpkin puree now. This makes me very sad.

I'm doing a Day of the Dead party/ project with my International Studies elective class. The kids have done a ton of research about this holiday and Mexican culture in general. They are particularly taken with the cheerful and colorful skull imagery that predominates. Gotta love middle school. Anyways, these are "Skullipops". Pretzel sticks dipped in white chocolate and decorated with black gel frosting. A very simple and easy project to do with kids. They are currently hiding in a corner of my office, otherwise I'm afraid my co workers will steal them.

I'll conclude with some shots from the Cumming Greek Festival a few weeks ago. This was way better than the Atlanta Greek Festival.

The Foodsplosion Is Coming

Next weekend is what I'm tentatively calling "The Foodsplosion". In layman's terms, I am overbooked on foodie events.

First up, I'm going to the Elijay Apple Festival for the first time. I've always wanted to go, and I recently discovered my eating buddy, Diane, has a similar desire. So we're going to go, and pig out on apples and apple derived products. Admission is $5 for adults and the festival is going on this weekend as well, if anyone wants to do an impulsive drive to the mountains tomorow.

I'm also committed to the Cumming Greek Festival, which is the smaller, less crowded baby sister of the Atlanta Greek Festival. I will have roasted lamb at this one, or there will be death.

And right here in my own back yard, A Taste of Roswell is happening next Saturday. Admission is free and food tickets cost 50 cents each. There's always a great selection of participating restaurants. We've found a few of our favorites this way.

I will be attending at least one of these events next weekend and live photo blogging it via my mobile. It'll either be super awesome or supper annoying for you.

Greek Festivals!

I nearly forgot yesterday, that it's Greek Fesitval season here. I don't know if there is actually a season for this sort of thing, it just seems they all happen at once here.

This weekend is the venerable Atlanta Greek Festival. This is pretty much the gold standard of Greek festivals. Great food, traditional crafts and dances on display and lots and lots of Greek culture and pride. All held in the beautiful Greek Orthodox Cathedral on Clairmont Road. Which is actually the only thing I don't like. Don't get me wrong, the catherdral is beautiful and listening to the lecture about it's history and the history of Orthodoxy in general is always a highlight of my visits. The problem is that the festival has outgrown the grounds. I have found it nearly impossible to navigate through the crowds some years. Every year, I say I'm going to skip it because of the crowds... And every year I remember how great their roasted lamb is. Sigh.

Admission is $3 per person. Parking is free in the Century City Office Park and a shuttle will run you over to the festival and back. It's very efficiently done, so there's little waiting.

A little closer to my Northside beat is the Cumming Greek Festival. Less well known and far less crowded than its big brother downtown, this is held in a tiny country church in Cumming, Saints Raphael, Nicholas and Irene Orthodox Church on the weekend of Oct. 18 & 19th. Admission is free.

The Cumming Festival is smaller in every way, but the food. The organizers offer a bigger menu of Greek treats, and a more laid back atmosphere to go along with it. They've been holding this festival since 2005, which is plenty of time to work out the kinks, but not so much that word has gotten out about this hidden gem.

Something tells me I'm going to be eating lots of roasted lamb this month. Yum.
